With a nod to the symmetry of it all, JetBrains today (8/8/08) released a milestone preview of the upcoming version 8 of its IntelliJ IDEA development environment, with new integration to JBoss Seam, among other enhancements.
Seam is a framework created for developing Web 2.0 applications, and it brings together such technologies as AJAX, Java ServerFaces, and Enterprise JavaBeans 3 with portals and business process management capabilities.
The focus of the release, according to IntelliJ IDEA project lead Max Shafirov, has been "on an all-new platform for supporting multiple programming languages … We are creating a powerful plug-in for Scala, as well as … IDEs for Ruby, Python and other languages."
The release will include support for REST-architected Web services, for the Struts 2 and Spring 2.5 application frameworks, and a debugger for Adobe's Flex applications and JavaScript. IntelliJ IDEA 8 will also work with the open-source FreeMarker and Velocity template engines, as well as the Maven build tool and the Subversion 1.5 version control system.
Other enhancements for developers include a dedicated SQL console, new code inspections with quick fixes and automatic refactorings, among others.
The general release is expected to be by mid- to late December.
