The number of women in software development has nearly doubled in the past 15 years, according to a new Evans Data survey.

Evans Data’s Developer Marketing 2014 survey of 450 software developers showed that 19.3% (or approximately 3.5 million) developers worldwide are women, compared to the years between 2003 and 2009, when the percentage of female developers was in single digits.

Female developers also tend to be younger, as more than 40% of the women surveyed were under age 30.

The survey, which polled developer demographics, psychographics and attitudes, also measured metrics such as age, marital and parental status, education, and level of introversion or extroversion.
