Cloudera, the leader in enterprise analytic data management powered by Apache Hadoop, announced it has acquired Xplain.io, an innovator in self-service analytics. Xplain.io’s product, “Big Data Integration Service” (BDIS), automates the design, integration, and optimization of data models that use SQL, NoSQL, and NewSQL technologies, enabling data architects to transform data models that dramatically accelerate Business Intelligence and applications. Cloudera and Xplain.io together will help customers accelerate their enterprise data hub (EDH) deployments and make it easier for them to add more data and more complex workloads (automation, optimization, self-service) to their Cloudera  environments. The Xplain.io team will join Cloudera. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Xplain.io’s founding team has a deep heritage of database experience with companies such as Cisco, IBM, Informix, Oracle and Sybase. “We have over 100 users of our product and the majority of them have already adopted CDH at the core of their Hadoop-based enterprise data hubs,” said Anupam Singh, chief executive officer, Xplain.io. “In fact, they ask us time and again to ensure that we work closely with Cloudera, as they see multi-fold benefits when our technologies operate together. Our joint expertise benefits customers by providing them data management tools for building the most powerful big data analytic platform.”

Cloudera views self-service analytics as a major growth driver for Cloudera Enterprise and Xplain.io’s technology will help strengthen customer adoption of CDH, the leading Hadoop distribution. Xplain.io will also allow customers to understand the analytic workloads that they already have, and assist them to deploy more complex data and workloads faster than they can today. The scale, speed and flexibility of Cloudera’s platform for Big Data combined with Xplain.io’s technology makes it the most robust data management system for self-service analytics.

With the addition of Xplain.io, Cloudera enables extension of the self-service analytics revolution directly into the Hadoop platform. Passively studying the behaviors of analytics users, Xplain.io helps customers to discover, analyze, and optimize the ever evolving data models in their Hadoop environment.

“The business intelligence industry has demonstrated that analytics is moving to a self-service model,” said Charles Zedlewski, vice president, Products, Cloudera. “The ability for end-users to find and analyze their own data makes teams more productive, companies more agile and frees BI experts for more value-added tasks. With the addition of Xplain.io technology and expertise, we have the opportunity to extend the self-service analytics revolution into the Hadoop platform itself.”
