The MariaDB Foundation is providing application developers with enhanced performance and functionality through its latest release, MariaDB 10.

The latest release adds new features such as parallel replication and a further advanced group commits, making it faster than previous versions of MariaDB and MySQL, the foundation announced in a blog post.

The version 10 release also enables users to replicate data from multiple master servers in order to provide a complete view of the data being distributed across big datasets.

MariaDB 10 NoSQL capabilities include dynamic columns that store disparate labeled data objects in each row of a table; the ability to access data from Cassandra data; and a CONNECT engine that provides an easier way to handle data from NoSQL systems and traditional SQL databases.

Other enhancements include built-in sharding in the form of the Spider storage engine, and new replication features to combine sharding.

“MariaDB 10 is a landmark [in] open-source innovation and an evolution of the fundamental SQL technology which runs the world’s largest databases,” said Patrik Sallner, CEO of SkySQL, on the company’s blog. “Developers can now achieve state-of-the-art application performance at scale with a SQL database they know and trust.”

Along with MariaDB 10, SkySQL, a company that specializes in MariaDB and MySQL, released a new range of MariaDB products for enterprise use. The new versions of MariaDB Enterprise and MariaDB Enterprise Cluster combine traditional SQL with NoSQL.

MariaDB Enterprise 2 includes access to SkySQL’s support team, enterprise-grade monitoring, and backup tools, according to SkySQL.

MariaDB Enterprise Cluster 2 uses a user console and a management API to simplify the deployment of database Galera clusters, according to SkySQL.

“MariaDB Enterprise 2 and MariaDB Enterprise Cluster 2 allow businesses adopting MariaDB technologies to move beyond the garage to deploy their mission-critical apps and IT infrastructure on mature, proven database technologies while benefiting from NoSQL-like performance,” said Sallner in a press release.
