Applications are getting more complicated, and the amount of data surrounding them is beginning to explode. OpsClarity, an operations analytics and monitoring company coming out of stealth mode today, wants to contain that explosion. The company is releasing an advanced operations platform designed to bring intelligence to Web-scale applications.

“What we have built is an intelligent operations monitoring and analytics platform that combines application infrastructure monitoring with innovative data science analytics.” said Dhruv Jain, CEO and cofounder of OpsClarity. “The platform enables DevOps teams to visualize, understand and troubleshoot their application environments and issues like never before.”

Jain and his team decided to start OpsClarity because of the move to Web-scale apps, the lack of up-to-date operational tools, and the innovations in search and recommendation systems. According to Jain, operational tools weren’t keeping pace with the shift in application architecture, and most of the industry still relies on older open-source products that weren’t built for the massive amounts of data that flow into operation environments.

“There have been huge innovations in the last 10 years in machine learning, data science, large-scale streaming analytics, and yet none of this innovation has meaningfully touched the operation world,” Jain said. “The combination of these three trends sort of told us that there was a huge opportunity to build something transformational here.”

The platform uses machine learning, Big Data analytics, and data science to provide DevOps teams a solution that allows them to process and visualize massive amounts of data in real time, and to extract key insights. In addition, it is designed to think like an experienced operations architect, automatically detecting application architecture and system relationships, applying domain knowledge about modern app stacks, and understanding data.

“It keeps up with the way you change your environment,” said Jain. “As you know today, your application keeps changing, your infrastructure keeps changing almost every day, every week, so any documentation that you do in your wiki is outdated within weeks. In our world, with our product, this knowledge is always up-to-date, and the entire team has almost as good as an understanding of the application as the developer himself.”

The platform features:
• Unified data visibility to give DevOps teams the visibility into their app and infrastructure data
• A dynamic application architecture map (called the Operational Knowledge Graph) that aims to provide an understanding of relationships between services, and to continuously learn performance baselines for all system components
• A hyper-interactive visual interface to provide an immediate understanding of a component’s health, prioritized anomalies, and service-level metrics
• Anomaly detection and event correlation capabilities that enable DevOps teams to quickly perform root cause analysis

“At the end of the day, the developer’s job is to create new things,” said Sid Choudhury, vice president of product management at OpsClarity. “They are the builders in the world, and we want them to have the comfort or the feeling that they are covered and there is nothing to worry about, so they can easily go on to build the next thing that their business depends on them for.”

Going forward, the company plans to release more analytic capabilities dedicated to operations use cases, provide better data visualization capabilities, and support and create new levels of visibility and troubleshooting.

The company also announced an US$11 million Series A round of funding led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA) that will be used to expand the company’s engineering team and ramp up a release to the market.
