Affdex, software that captures and analyzes facial expressions, is now available for mobile developers in a new SDK.

Developed by Affectiva, a startup that grew out of the MIT Media Lab, Affdex is designed to read facial expressions captured on standard webcams in laptops, tablets and smartphones. The app measures the emotional connection viewers have with advertising, media and brands by running analytics on video footage or images.

According to the company, the standard Affdex software processes and analyzes facial data in the Affdex Cloud, reading emotional states such as surprise, dislike, concentration and attentiveness by using computer vision and machine learning algorithms. The mobile SDK allows processing to take place on the device for real-time emotion data.

The facial images are not saved or transmitted after analysis for privacy purposes. The Affdex SDK is available here.
