University of California, Irvine Extension announces new online information technology courses in Java development for the winter quarter. Part of the “Enterprise Development Using Java Technologies Certification Program,” courses will benefit information technology developers, administrators and industry professionals by providing the knowledge to create and manage advanced Internet applications using both Java Seam and RESTful CMS technology. Courses begin in January 2011, with registration currently taking place.

“With today’s high demand for rich and engaging websites, participants in these courses will stay up-to-date on the best ways to meet this industry demand,” says Dr. Dave Dimas, director of UC Irvine Extension’s engineering, sciences and information technology programs. “Many of today’s administrators use Java to create Internet applications, and the knowledge provided by these courses will create more opportunities for students to advance their careers and gain access to higher paying jobs.”

Both courses are electives in the Enterprise Development Using Java Technologies Certification Program <http://unex.uci.edu/certificates/it/j2ee/> , which gives practicing Java developers and software engineers the ability to expand their knowledge of advanced capabilities that exist within the Java program and acquire new skills. JBoss Seam is a modern Java open-source framework for enterprise development that allows companies to save money on licensing software, while also providing great flexibility, scalability, and maintainability when using the latest Java technologies. The program equips students with the knowledge of advanced features within the Java programming language, as well as the capabilities to develop complex software for business, science, and technology applications–providing opportunities for career advancement and senior level positions.

The new IT courses include:

“RESTful CMS Applications With Java and JCR/Sling” (Five course meetings from Jan. 17 through Feb. 27)–introduces the fundamentals of the Java Content Repository (JCR) standard in conjunction with Apache Sling. By the end of the course, participants will be able to build RESTful applications on top of the Apache Sling/JCR frameworks, in addition to a small content management system (CMS).

“Seam” (Five course meetings from Feb. 7 through March 20) –covers the concepts and framework of the Seam program. Students will be introduced to mechanisms behind all major Seam concepts and features. Upon course completion, participants will be able to develop and build a rich internet application using Seam technology.
