The fine folks at Axceler are all about governance. They have been studying how organizations are approaching SharePoint governance, either to get existing deployments under control or to roll out new deployments. To garner that information, Axceler has made available a survey—open through mid-October—asking for your input on such issues as roles and responsibilities, access to data and documents, administration, and ensuring business value. The survey is also intended to measure an organization’s preparedness, such as having a governance plan in place, before deployment initiatives are undertaken.

The results of the survey will be shared with all participants, and will be made available to everyone else in a white paper that will include the results of past governance surveys. The survey is available here.

Also, Axceler this year is introducing the Golden Lifeguard Award, which will recognize “an individual or a team that has conceived, developed and defined best practices around governance that resulted in a notable increase in security and compliance within their SharePoint environment.” I will be among the panel of judges considering each entry. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 18 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. The winner will be announced at Microsoft’s SharePoint Conference 2012 in Las Vegas, at a special evening (read: nightclub!) event at the Winn Resort. Here’s how you can submit an entry.

Please participate. It’s through efforts such as these that actionable data is generated, helping each of us in the community better understand the need for governance—and how it’s best put into place—so we all can do better.
