Accusoft, the leading provider of document, content and imaging solutions, today announces the release of the USB Scanner SDK, a toolkit that enables developers to easily add document scanning, via USB-based hardware scanners, to their Android apps. Developers can follow the step-by-step instructions in the toolkit to integrate USB scanning into existing Android applications, or build new scanning-enabled apps.

Using apps that have been enhanced with the code libraries and simple steps outlined in the SDK, users can direct-connect their Android devices to a scanner via USB cable, run the scanner from within the app (and control such scanner features as resolution, brightness and color mode), and pass the scan directly into the application. Apps can scan single- or multi-page documents, and save them in PDF, JPEG, TIFF or BMP format.

Though the range of potential uses is limited only by the developer’s imagination, building USB scanning into a workflow has a number of immediately apparent beneficial applications: It can empower truck drivers to scan complex bills of lading and other documents directly into a transportation management system (TMS). It can give mobile or home health workers in the field the ability to record and transmit signed medical forms efficiently, improving productivity and patient care. Or it can accelerate insurance adjustments and appraisals by enabling field workers to transmit vehicle information and signed statements quickly and easily through a single, integrated app. Developers of mobile applications that have a document workflow can use the USB Scanner SDK to get documents into the flow without having to write code to support specific scanners.

The SDK comprises code libraries, Java source code examples for reference and testing, step-by-step instructions, and access to detailed Help files for advanced applications and troubleshooting. Applications require Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) or later and a supported scanner; supported scanners are listed at http://www.accusoft.com/usbscannersupported.htm. Developers and users can see and test this technology in action by downloading a trial app version from Google Play (search for “USB scanner trial”). Users who do not see their scanner in the list of supported scanners can also use the app to try the technology with their scanner model.
