Microsoft has announced plans to cut up to 7,800 additional jobs over the next several months, primarily focused on its mobile phone business.

In an email to employees, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella detailed the restructuring of the company’s phone business, which will incur an impairment charge of approximately US$7.6 billion related to Microsoft’s acquired Nokia Devices and Services business assets, in addition to a restructuring charge of approximately $750 million to $850 million. Nadella plans to streamline Microsoft’s phone hardware and software portfolio under the new Windows and Devices Group to focus on three specific customer segments: business customers, phone buyers and Windows fans.

“I am committed to our first-party devices including phones,” Nadella wrote. “However, we need to focus our phone efforts in the near term while driving reinvention. We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem that includes our first-party device family.”

Dynatrace has announced the new release of Dynatrace Application Monitoring and User Experience Management with greater visibility into application performance through a ‘customer experience cockpit.’

Based on the company’s recent merger with online performance monitoring company Keynote, the new ‘cockpit’ release of Dynatrace’s APM offers visibility into real-time views of user satisfaction metrics with their application experience. As Dynatrace CMO Nicolas Robbe explained in an interview about the merger, the cockpit acts as a  control room for managing and optimizing the digital performance metrics and user experiences defining many organizations’ modern business models.

“Most of the applications and digital channels out there are still underserved from a monitoring perspective, and at the rate at which apps are being created, we’re still playing catch-up,” said Robbe. “There is such a need for this digital cockpit that I see APM becoming this essential enabler for not just digital performance, but the management of your digital environment from a technical performance, a business and a user experience perspective.”

More details about the release are available here.

Text Control moves to GitHub
Text Control has announced it is moving all sample projects, wrappers and additional resources onto GitHub.

“GitHub became the market leader in Git hosting over the last years. It simply makes sense to join the market leader: More repositories, more users, more forks, more revisions, more everything on GitHub,” Björn Meyer, president of Text Control USA, wrote in a blog post.

The transition to GitHub will happen in steps over the course of several weeks. According to the company, GitHub will be the central hub for its official samples, sample projects from blog entries, samples from the source code libraries and other resources such as UI icons.
