AvePoint, which last week released its DocAve Extender storage management tool for free in North America, has decided to release the product for free worldwide. The tool enables organizations to automate the movement of binary large objects (BLOBs) from a SQL database to a network or cloud-based storage system while maintaining access for end users, the company said.

According to AvePoint, BLOBs can consume up to 95% of SharePoint’s SQL Server Content Database storage, potentially leading to poor database performance and a degraded user experience.

“We are proud to expand our free release of DocAve Extender to the global SharePoint community,” Tony Lanni, AvePoint’s vice president of corporate development, said in a statement. “BLOB management is really just one piece of the SharePoint storage optimization story, which also involves intelligent data life-cycle management and the migration-free connection of legacy data to SharePoint.”

Lanni mentioned that AvePoint will offer full support for users of DocAve Extender, which is part of the company’s Storage Optimization tool suite. It supports both SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint 2010 installations. DocAve Extender is available now as free download.
