The challenge of Big Data is not in gathering it; the challenge is being able to act on it as quickly as possible, said database expert Joe Celko in an interview with Roberto Zicari, editor of Big Data news site ODBMS.ORG. Celko explained how the models, storage and speed of Big Data are changing, how to choose the right tools, and when to use non-relational databases. An excerpt from the interview is reprinted below:
“The real problem is not collecting the data, even at insanely high speeds; the real problem is acting on it in time,” Celko said. “This is where we have things like automatic stock trading systems. The database is integrated rather than separated from the application.”
